How to Find a Job on H-4 EAD (Remote, Entry-Level, Non-IT)

Updated 2026-10-212 min readNot legal advice inWX
QUICK ANSWER

On H-4 EAD you can apply to almost any US job, because the employer does not have to sponsor you. The key is to say so clearly on applications, show your EAD dates, and target employers that hire people with EADs. Remote, part-time, entry-level and non-IT jobs are all allowed.

Answer the sponsorship question correctly

Most applications ask two questions. Are you authorized to work in the US? Will you now or in the future require sponsorship?

With a valid H-4 EAD, you are authorized to work today. Many H-4 holders answer "no" to needing sponsorship now, because the employer files nothing for you.

The "future" part is harder. Your card depends on your spouse's status and must be renewed. Answer honestly and add a short note, such as: "I hold an H-4 EAD valid through [date]. No petition or sponsorship cost is needed to hire me."

Do not claim to be a citizen or green card holder. Employers check your card on Form I-9.

Plan around renewal gaps

Employers worry about one thing most: your card expiring. Since October 30, 2025, H-4 EAD renewals no longer get an automatic extension. If USCIS has not approved your renewal by the expiry date, you must stop work.

File your renewal as early as allowed, up to 180 days before expiry. Tell employers your card's end date and when you filed. See H-4 EAD processing time for current waits.

Remote and part-time jobs

Remote work for a US employer is fine on an H-4 EAD. So is part-time, contract or freelance work, and you can hold more than one job.

Good remote fits include customer support, technical writing, QA testing, bookkeeping, data analysis, recruiting coordination and tutoring.

For contract roles through staffing firms, ask whether you will be a W-2 employee or 1099 contractor. Both are allowed with an EAD. Our guide to C2C and contract jobs explains the setups.

Entry-level and non-IT jobs

You do not need a degree-level job, unlike H-1B. Retail, hospitality, healthcare support, teaching aides, data entry, banking operations and administrative roles are all open to you.

Some jobs have their own rules. Many federal government jobs require US citizenship, so check each posting. Licensed fields like nursing, teaching or accounting need a state license first.

If you are returning after a career break, short certificates and volunteer work can help close the gap on your resume.

Where to look

  • Employers that already hire visa holders. They are used to EADs. Browse our H1B sponsors list and H1B jobs by role.
  • Large employers with formal HR teams, which handle EAD paperwork routinely.
  • Staffing and consulting firms that place contractors.
  • Local community and spouse networks, which often share referrals for H-4 EAD friendly employers.

Think ahead about your own status

An H-4 EAD can end if your spouse changes jobs or loses status. If you want independence, some employers will later register you for your own H-1B. Read H-4 EAD vs H-1B before you decide.

Questions

Do I need sponsorship on H-4 EAD?

No, not to start working. The employer files nothing, though your card depends on your spouse's status and must be renewed.

Can I work from home on H-4 EAD?

Yes. Remote work for a US employer is allowed, as long as your EAD is valid.

Can I work part-time or with no experience on H-4 EAD?

Yes. The EAD does not set hours, salary or skill levels, so part-time and entry-level jobs are allowed.

Can I work in retail or government on H-4 EAD?

Retail and most private jobs, yes. Many federal government jobs require US citizenship, so check each listing.

Is it harder to get hired on H-4 EAD than on H-1B?

It is often easier, because there is no lottery or petition. The main concern for employers is EAD renewal gaps.
